Pink Floyd always had a knack of putting on one hell of a show for their fans, from their psychedelic early days at the UFO Club and Roundhouse through to The Wall tour and the Division Bell concerts that spawned Pulse.

But one of their best live shows didn't have an audience at all. In 1971, Pink Floyd played a very special concert at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy with just a film crew for company.

Directed by Adrian Maben, the film was released as Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii the following year.

It's been re-released a few times over the years, but the original film has now had both its audio and video painstakingly restored to give an experience like never before.

The footage has been digitally re-mastered in 4K from the original 35mm, with enhanced audio newly mixed by Steven Wilson.

As well as home release, the film will be coming back to cinemas as Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII and even be screened in IMAX for even more immersion.

Tickets go on sale from Wednesday, March 5 at 6am PT / 9am ET / 2pm GMT.

Alongside the film, the live album will be released on May 2 on CD, Digital Audio, Dolby Atmos and vinyl.

Director of Restoration for Pink Floyd Lana Topham said: "Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd At Pompeii, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment.

"The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after."

Steven Wilson added: "Ever since my dad brainwashed me as a kid by playing The Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Pink Floyd has been my favourite band. They are my 'Beatles', deeply ingrained in my musical DNA.

"I first saw Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema. It made an incredible impression on me with its untethered and exploratory rock music made by four musicians that seemed to epitomise the notion of intellectual cool.
