The Village People have confirmed that they will perform at the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The group's massive hit 'Y.M.C.A.' has been a long-term Trump favourite, and was frequently played during his campaign rallies.

In a statement on Facebook, the group gave their reasons for performing at the events and explained that it was an apolitical move to unite Americans.

"We are announcing today that VILLAGE PEOPLE have accepted an invitation from President Elect Trump's campaign to participate in inaugural activities, including at least one event with President Elect Trump," said the group.

"We know this wont make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics."

They continued: "Our song 'Y.M.C.A.' is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.

"Therefore, we believe it's now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump."

While the Village People initially asked Trump to stop using 'Y.M.C.A.' at his rallies, that request was later retracted the following year and the band said they welcomed the boost in sales the attention to the song brought.

The Village People formed in 1977 and became massive superstars of the disco era.

Their hits included not just 'Y.M.C.A'. but also 'Macho Man', 'Go West' and 'In The Navy'.

They have continued to perform and record new music, despite undergoing several lineup changes over the years.

The current lineup still includes founding member Victor Willis, who plays the Cop/Admiral character.
