A Complete Unknown has received an impressive eight nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards.

The Timothée Chalamet fronted Bob Dylan biopic clearly impressed Oscars voters, as it’s been nominated in categories including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.

Timothée Chalamet has been nominated for his role as Bob Dylan in the highly competitive Best Actor category, and Edward Norton – who recently spoke to Gold’s Kirsty Gallagher about the film – has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as Dylan’s music mentor Pete Seeger.

Monica Barbaro, who stars in A Complete Unknown as fellow folk music sensation Joan Baez, has also received a Best Supporting Actress nomination, and the film’s director James Mangold is up in the Best Director category as well.

The film, which tells the story of Bob Dylan’s rise to fame in the folk music scene and his later shift towards making music with electric instruments during the mid 60s, is also nominated for Best Costume Design.

Netflix’s musical crime film Emilia Pérez received the most nominations this year, breaking the record for the greatest number of nominations earned by a film not in the English language with its 13 nods.

Last year’s blockbuster musical adaptation Wicked and epic period drama The Brutalist followed with ten nominations each, meanwhile papal thriller Conclave tied with A Complete Unknown as the third most nominated film, after it earned eight nominations too.
